I concur. My late dog was wonderful with my kids when they were babies. They seemed to understand each other in a way I could not. It was beautiful to see. He'd even let me know when one of them was sick or in distress. Of course, exercise a lot of caution and supervise at all times when introducing your new baby to your dog. Always. He is very missed. I know far too many people who fit this profile. FAR TOO MANY. I even dated one off and on for 3 years... though today, I don't for the life of me understand why - except that I was trauma-bonded to him, my mother adored him and his mother adored me. Every time I tried to get out he'd scare the crap out of me (including almost killing me at least once and convincing me it was my fault I was in the hospital with a broken jaw) ... Science is beginning to suggest those instincts may have roots deep in the brain. Research in young volunteers points to some kind of "sixth sense" -- a mechanism in the brain that picks up on subtle clues, then sends out subconscious signals of trouble ahead. The finding could help explain certain intuitive phenomena seen among humans. For example, in the recent Asian tsunami, aboriginal people sought out higher ground in the moments before the disaster, as did many wild animals. Could subtle changes in weather or the environment have warned them early on? Just such an early warning system may exist in the anterior cingulate cortex, a brain area important in processing complex information, according to a report by psychologists at Washington University in St. Louis.
