In Political Sex Scandals, Guys Still Rule

Image
by Jane Marcellus Has anybody else noticed that most news stories about politicians' affairs aren't really about women? There are women in them, of course. There's the Wronged Wife , who is often portrayed as a victim in stories that frame her in a domestic light, focusing on how she is " coping " and whether " she'll stand by her man ," the Cheating Husband . And then, of course, there's the Other Woman , without whom there would be no story. We know her type: a bimbo, a jezebel, a . . . you know. We hear even less from her than from Wronged Wife , since we all know she is (sotto voce here) " unstable ." We might see her photo -- preferably a semi-nude shot taken in better days--shared with the press by a former boyfriend, now a happily-married tax attorney. The dichotomy that Helen Benedict described over a decade ago in " Virgin or Vamp: How the Press Covers Sex Crimes " is never more true than in stories about extramarital...

Sarah Palin is Good News for Feminism!

Image
by Ann Althouse Cathy Young has a nice op-ed in the WSJ , "Why feminists hate Sarah Palin." Excerpt: Left-wing feminists have a hard time dealing with strong, successful conservative women in politics such as Margaret Thatcher. Sarah Palin seems to have truly unhinged more than a few, eliciting a stream of vicious, often misogynist invective.... I disagree with Sarah Palin on a number of issues, including abortion rights. But when the feminist establishment treats not only pro-life feminism but small-government, individualist feminism as heresy, it writes off multitudes of women. I wouldn't have titled this piece "Why feminists hate Sarah Palin." Young never concedes that the feminism that liberals say is the only feminism is, in fact, the only feminism. Nor would I. There was a time -- I was there -- back in the 80s and early 90s, when feminists would speak of "feminisms" and were always promoting some new version of feminism that, we'd ar...

A "Scorned Woman"?

Image
Poor Scott McClelland. Now BushCo and their PNAC cronies are calling the guy everything but a "scorned woman." If he was a Jew - there'd be accusations of "lashon hara" being leveled at him. If we wait long enough -- maybe there will. I've been called "a scorned woman" or "hell hath no fury" or "unrequieted stalker" and even a "disgruntled employee." I always did it for the right reasons. I never ever have done so to "get" someone or to "have revenge." I have to laugh because each and every SINGLE TIME I've been called those names it has been for the same exact reason: I TOLD THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH. Being a truth-teller or whistleblower is no fun. Scott obviously just couldn't live with himself anymore. What he said was no different than what many people have said in the last 8 years of the Bush Crime Family disaster in Washington. The Republican Party is going have a rough time pulling...
