Mental Illness Delays Justice

Image
It seems there may be no justice for my late therapist, Kathryn Faughey; as you can see in the below article. It has been over a year since Dr. Faughey was brutally and needlessly murdered by David Tarloff... and I am not over it. I don't think I ever will be. But as Dr. Faughey said to me many times, "some things you don't get over. you adapt and move forward." So I can say, yes I have. And I hope your family & friends have too. I have attempted to sit down and write a note to her husband about the 15 years of care she gave me. I can't do it. (If you are reading this Mr. A - I have tried a number of times in the last 13 months. I think it's just a form of continuing denial on my part and I apologize.) It took me months to remove her phone number from my cell and her email from my contacts. And still many many times I have stopped and said to myself, "I need to call Dr. Faughey"... then I remember. I still have what I can guess is more ...

Justice in Purgatory

I can't imagine the agony this is causing the family & friends of Dr. Faughey; whom I was priviledged to be a patient of for 15 years. Not being able to see justice brought against her killer is hard. Dr. Faughey, however, I know would have shown more compassion that I can muster. Not a day has gone by since this past February when her life was snatched away from her by this psycho, that I haven't thought about her and been grateful that she was part of my life and my support system for so long. I still haven't been able to write a decent note to her husband or anyone else about this; and for that I apologize. I really have not been the same since the funeral, though I have carried on with my life in the way she encouraged me to. Dr. Faughey saved my life at least twice. She helped me steer through some of the worst times of my life and never once did she judge, scold or minimize. She validated, agreed and "got" me. She supported, bolstered my self este...

Justice, Justice ... Still Pursued

Not guilty? Claiming to be the Messiah?... Throw away the key! Mental patient David Tarloff made a grotesque claim while under questioning in the meat-cleaver murder of an Upper East Side psychologist - telling cops his grandmother had tried to rape him as a young boy. Tarloff, 40, who yesterday pleaded not guilty in Manhattan Supreme Court to the Feb. 12 murder of Kathryn Faughey in her East 79th Street office, said "that his grandmother moved in with him and, while he was sleeping, he woke up and his . . . grandmother was on top of him, straddling him," according to police statements. The Queens psych patient also told cops that an unknown man led him behind some buildings and fondled him when he was 5 years old. Tarloff, an out-of-work telemarketer, has been in and out of psych wards for the past 17 years, and may seek a psychiatric defense to the grisly murder, said his lawyer, Bryan Konoski. "That allegation has come up a few times," Konoski said of the suppos...

Treating Insanity as DANGER, not Transgression

In 1995, when my Atypical M.S. became symptomatic I learned more about the disability process in the U.S. than I ever wanted to know. I had to fight for my benefits with little energy or support. I had to fight for a diagnosis and to prove empirically what my body was screaming to me. To this day, I am fighting for E.R.I.S.A. reform and disability fairness against one of the biggest lobbies in Washington, the Health Insurance Lobby - which has a stranglehood on the benefits & welfare of too many people in the U.S. who paid their premiums in good faith. In light of the murder of my beloved counselor, Kathryn Faughey, I remain undeterred - and in fact, reinvigorated. Those of you who still work, go ask for a copy of your policy from your Benefits Office. No, not the copy of the sanitized handbook they give you - a copy of the ACTUAL policy signed between your employer and their insurer. Don't stop asking until you get it - you are entitled by law to see it. Now ask yourse...
