Women's Vital Importance

by Rabbi Shlomo Riskin The book of Exodus opens with a throwback to what we already know from the last portions of the book of Genesis: the names of Jacob’s children and the 70 Israelite souls — the Jewish households — who came to Egypt. “And these are the names of the children of Israel who came to Egypt with; each individual and his house came,” it says in Exodus 1:1. Why the repetition? The great commentator, Rashi, attempts to explain that “even though Jacob’s progeny were counted by name previously, the names here are repeated to show us how beloved they were.” However, these first few verses of Exodus actually are a prelude to the enslavement in Egypt, the tragedy of this first Jewish exile. I understand a loving recount when times are joyous, but I find such mention superfluous when we are facing suffering and tragedy. Secondly, Pharaoh made a striking distinction between males and females when he ordered Jewish destruction: “And Pharaoh commanded his entire nation saying, ‘ever...

IF YOU MAKE A WOMAN CRY

Image
"Be very careful if you make a woman cry, because God counts her tears. The woman came out of a man's rib. Not from his feet to be walked on. Not from his head to be superior, but from the side to be equal. Under the arm to be protected, and next to the heart to be loved." Hebrew Talmud PLEASE CLICK HERE TO JBLOG ME

Unbelievable! The smearing and slamming of Sarah Palin is already boggling my mind. I remember a professor of mine in college talking about the inner process of acting with me. We were sitting in his office and the conversation was getting very esoteric and interesting to me. At one point in our chat he leaned forward and said, "be careful what you hate and fear; because there's an inherent danger in BECOMING that thing as you try to fight it." I didn't understand what he meant at the time but I remembered and as the years wore on he's been proved right over & over again. The Dems and Far Left as now JUST AS BAD AS THE ACCUSED THE FAR RIGHT OF BEING IN 2000 AND 2004!! Today alone I heard that: Sarah Palin isn't a good mother to her infant, special needs child - because she's running for Vice President! (Would they say that to a man?) Sarah Palin was a knee-jerk choice on McCain's part because the RNC vetoed Joe Lieberman. (say what??) Sarah Pa...

What Religious Extremism is Doing to Women

Restoring Virginity Becomes Risky Business By Sandy Kobrin / WeNews correspondent Many women who seek hymen-repair surgery do so under threat of death if family members in religious fundamentalist households find out they are not virgins. Now, the U.S. doctors who help them are also being intimidated . LOS ANGELES (WOMENSENEWS)--Some doctors perform these specialized surgeries on women late at night when there's no one else in the waiting room. The patients are most often women of Middle Eastern descent, some with origins from countries such as Iran and Saudi Arabia. They frequently give false names and pay in cash. They arrive alone, faces hidden, under elaborate hats, wigs, scarves and sunglasses and, afraid, say doctors. They are there for hymenoplasties, or the repair of hymens, which, when intact, are widely recognized as evidence of virginity. The surgeries could save their lives, noted the physicians who perform them, because, according to some interpretations of Islamic law...

RELIGION OF (gag) PEACE - STRIKES A BLOW AT WOMEN'S RIGHTS... AGAIN (TEHRAN) Activists should not try to change Islamic laws relating to women's rights, Iran's supreme leader said on Wednesday, two days after one campaigner was reportedly sentenced to 34 months in jail and ten lashes. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, also lambasted the West for using women as a tool to advertise products, make money and to satisfy "disorderly and unlawful sexual needs," state television said. He was addressing a group of women, most dressed conservatively in head-to-toe black chadors, in Tehran ahead of Thursday's anniversary of the birth of Prophet Mohammad's daughter, Fatima, when Iran honors mothers and women. Campaigners say Iranian women face difficulties in getting a divorce and criticize inheritance laws they say are unjust and the fact their court testimony is worth half that of a man's. The Islamic Republic rejects allegations it is discriminating against women, saying...
