Honor killings: When the ancient and the modern collide

Image
(where are the feminists? why aren't we marching in the streets to stop this heinous and barbaric practice on American soil?! Isn't FEMINISM the notion that WOMEN ARE PEOPLE TOO!) by Cinnamon Stillwell Throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, young Muslim women are being targeted for violence. Lest it be thought hate crimes are to blame, it is, in fact, their own relatives who are the perpetrators. So-calledthonor killings, whereby a Muslim male family member, typically the father, murders his daughter in order to defend the family's honor, is a growing problem. While statistics are notoriously hard to come by due to the private nature of such crimes and the fact that very few are reported, the United Nations Population Fund approximates that as many as 5,000 women are murdered in this manner each year worldwide. Undoubtedly that's a low estimate, as reports from Turkey, Jordan, Pakistan and the Palestinian territories, among other locales, are fil...

How NOT to Advance Arab - Israeli Peace

Image
by David Harris Throughout his life, one of Yasser Arafat's favorite themes was that there was no historical Jewish connection to Israel. He would assert that there never was a Jewish Temple in Jerusalem, that the Western Wall has no Jewish significance, and even that Abraham himself wasn't a Jew. Indeed, he went so far as to reject the Jewish link to Jerusalem in the presence of US President Bill Clinton during the Camp David talks, evoking outrage from the American leader and offering insight into why the negotiations were doomed to fail . Arafat's views, unsurprisingly, were echoed relentlessly by Palestinian media outlets and textbooks, not to mention Muslim clergy. Generations of Palestinians were "educated" to believe that the Jews were interlopers, not a people indigenous to the Middle East. This had nothing to do with history, since there was abundant evidence of the intimate Jewish tie to the land dating back well over 3500 years, not to mention the spiri...

Mortified About Being Deployed?

Image
By James Dao Born and reared in Virginia, the son of immigrant parents from a small Palestinian town near Jerusalem, he joined the Army right out of high school, against his parents’ wishes. The Army, in turn, put him through college and then medical school, where he trained to be a psychiatrist. But Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the 39-year-old man accused of Thursday’s mass shooting at Fort Hood, Tex., started having second thoughts about his military career a few years ago after other soldiers harassed him for being a Muslim , he told relatives in Virginia. He had also more recently expressed deep concerns about being sent to Iraq or Afghanistan. Having counseled scores of returning soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder, first at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington and more recently at Fort Hood, he knew all too well the terrifying realities of war, said a cousin, Nader Hasan. “He was mortified by the idea of having to deploy,” Mr. Hasan said. “He had people telling him o...

Run Rifqa Run!

Image
Maybe if the courts and government refuse to see the danger here, we need to start an Underground Railroad for these girls! A 17-year old girl who fled from her home, fearing her Muslim parents would kill her for converting to Christianity, must go back to Ohio, a Florida judge ruled Tuesday. Judge Daniel Dawson ruled Ohio has jurisdiction over the case involving the teen, Rifqa Bary. Before the girl gets sent back, the judge says he needs immigration papers proving her status in the U.S. and proof from the state of Florida that she can continue her virtual schooling and receive credit in Ohio. She is expected to be placed in foster care when she returns and will also be provided with psychiatric evaluations. Her parents will also receive psychiatric evaluations. Rifqa can be back in Ohio as early as this week, or by an Oct. 23 follow-up hearing. Rifqa fled to Florida after her parents, Mohamed and Aysha Bary, learned that she was baptized earlier this year without their knowledge. The...

Obama Birth Certificate Controversy Continues...

Image
In 1981, I applied for a U.S. Passport. I needed to get a copy of my birth certificate, which my mother gave me. However, it wasn't the one issued by the city and state of my birth - the only one she had was notification of my Baptism - just a couple weeks after I was born. Wait a second... nothing in my life has really ever been that simple... I wrote the Health Dept. of the city where I was born and obtained a State-Certified copy... along with a note... that my original birth certificate had not been 'stamped' (i.e. that the official seal of the State had not been embossed onto it) and that they had redone that for me. Now everything was all nice and legal. I looked into and found that the city of my birth had 'forgotten' to 'stamp' over 500 birth certificates the year I was born (a baby-boomer year)... so that means for over 20 years I wasn't official. However, I undertook every means to clear it up, make it official and subsequently - got my Pa...

What Obama Taught Me

Image
by Ralph Peters Salaam aleikum, dudes! I thought I knew a little bit about the Middle East. Boy, was I wrong. Last week, President Obama set me straight. Here's what our president taught me during his Middle-Eastern pilgrimage: There is no more terrorism. Wow, cool! No more security checks at airports, right? It's unclear which side won, but it's all over. Obama didn't mention terrorism a single time in his star-turn speech in Cairo. Only a few "violent extremists" (our own troops?) remain at large. America tortured. I thought there was still a debate about that, but I guess not. And no regime in the Middle East tortures anybody, ever. Our bad. Churches and synagogues are about to open in Saudi Arabia. Since "Islam has a proud tradition of tolerance" and there are "over 1,200 mosques within our borders," I can't wait for the first Baptist hymn-sing in Riyadh. Sign me up! Behind closed doors with Saudi King Abdullah, our president must...

Scary Court Cases

Image
by Tom McLaughlin Two recent court cases on two continents make me very nervous. That they're even being tried is outrageous. That either may succeed is ominous, and few people know anything about either one. First is the case of Roger Barnett - an Arizona rancher who has been under siege by illegal immigrants and drug dealers. In the Washington Times, Barnett claims illegals "tore up water pumps, killed calves, destroyed fences and gates, stole trucks and broke into his home." Now sixteen illegals are suing him in federal court for $32 million, accusing him of "conspiring to violate their civil rights when he stopped them at gunpoint on his ranch next to the US-Mexico border." The sixteen illegals claim Barnett caused them emotional distress by holding them at gunpoint and they want $2 million each. Chief among our federal government's responsibilities is to protect American citizens from foreign invasion, but it's done little or nothing to help Barnett...

The Cost of Criticizing Jihadists

Image
By Nat Hentoff Geert Wilders - a film producer and also a member of parliament in the Netherlands - is facing a prison term there for "insulting" Muslims. His short film "Fitna" in 2008 juxtaposed verses from the Koran with scenes of violence committed by jihadist terrorists. The Dutch appellate court refused a free-speech defense because the insults were so egregious. If convicted, Wilders faces a maximum sentence of two years in prison. Said the defendant: "I lost my freedom already four and a half years ago in October 2004, when my 24-hour police protection started because of threats by Muslims in Holland and abroad to kill me." I have heard from Muslims in this country that jihadists around the world have more than insulted traditional Muslim law by their fierce punishments of both non-Muslims and Muslims who have acted in speech or writing against jihadists' reinterpretations of the Quran. Some of these protesters, exercising freedom of conscience...

Obama Should Return to His Muslim Roots

Image
From THE REAL BARACK OBAMA: Claiming President-elect Barack Obama has roots in the Islamic religion, Egyptian cleric Hassan Abu Al-Ashbal (left) has broadcast a plea urging Obama to convert to Islam while warning if the U.S. doesn’t withdraw its troops from the Middle East and provide aid to Muslims, those “eager for [death]” will attack America, Aaron Klein, Jerusalem bureau chief for World Net Daily, reported December 7, 2008. Claiming President-elect Barack Obama has roots in the Islamic religion, an Egyptian cleric has broadcast a plea ( video clip ) urging Obama to convert to Islam while warning if the U.S. doesn’t withdraw its troops from the Middle East and provide aid to Muslims, those “eager for [death]” will attack America. “My message to [Obama] is threefold. First, I invite him to convert to Islam. This is the call of the Prophet and of Allah. Oh Obama - convert to Islam, and you will be saved,” began Egyptian cleric Hassan Abu Al-Ashbal speaking last week on the state-f...

Which Came First?

Image
From The Confluence: Pop quiz: Robert is a 20 year-old black man who was raised in the ghettos of Chicago’s South Side by a single mother. He has committed a violent crime. The reason he committed the crime is: A. He is black B. He is a young male C. He comes from a single-parent home D. His economic situation (poverty) E. Insufficient data I would hope that everyone picked “E” as the correct answer, because we simply don’t have enough information to answer the question. Although “A” is obviously wrong, not that many years ago it was believed that blacks were predisposed to commit violent crimes. Answers “B,” “C,” and “D” are all considered by social scientists to be factors that contribute to violent crime. Let’s try another: Ali is a 20 year-old Iraqi man who was raised in the Anbar Province by a single mother. He has detonated a car bomb. The reason he detonated the bomb is: A. He is a Muslim B. He is a Muslim C. He is a Muslim D. He is a Muslim E. He is a Muslim Whe...

Can Muslim Fundamentalists be Moral?

Image
by Dr. Babu Suseelan All of us know daily occurrences of Jihadi terrorism, Islamic homicide bombing, beheading of innocent kafirs, and organized, repetitive, regular and predictable slaughter of Muslims by Shias and Sunnis in the name of Allah. In recent months we have seen Islamic bloodshed, mass murder, beheading, and homicide bombing in all countries with substantial number of Muslims. We have seen Muslims on a murder march shouting Allah Akbar in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Georgia, India, Philippians, Sudan and Chechnya. These are not a phenomena defined by the news media. Our judgments of reality based on daily occurrences tell us more about Islamic terrorism. Indeed, we take these destructive events for granted. Beneath all the pictures and the prose on Jihadi terrorism, and Islamic violence, we are still struggling to understand what is going on in the name of Islam. With all the freedom to discuss the subject of Jihadi terrorism, intellectuals on the far left a...
