The Essence of Being Human

Image
The quest for significant being is the heart of existence. We do not crave that quest; we find ourselves involved in it. Animals may be content when their needs are satisfied; humans insist not only on being satisfied but also on being able to satisfy, on being a need not imsply on having needs. Personal needs come and go, but one anxiety remains: Am I needed? There is no human being who has not been moved by that anxiety. Humans are not satisfied, lie is not meaningful to us, unless life is serving an end beyond itself, unless it is of value to someon else. The feeling of futility that comes with the sense of being useless, of not being needed in the world, is the comost common cause of psycho-neurosis. Happiness may be defined as he certainty of being needed. But who is in need of humans? Human existence cannot derive its ultimate meaning from society, because society itself is in need of meaning. There is not a soul on earth which, however vaguely or rarely, has not realized that li...

Self-Reinforcing Ignorance

How long before some pathetic ultra right-winger picks this up as proof that they are "better than" others? And that being conservative makes them "better" people? While I don't consider myself a full-blown liberal, I will take reality & truth over "justification" any day. I don't find it o.k. to justify the death of our soldiers in an illegal war any more than visiting prostitutes paid for by lobbyists while preaching family values to be justifiable. The stopwatch won't tick long for the happy kool-aid drinkers. (To my conservative friends, I know most of you are smart enough to 'get' the science here compared with your willfully ignorant bethren.) Conservatives Happier Than Liberals By Jeanna Bryner Individuals with conservative ideologies are happier than liberal-leaners, and new research pinpoints the reason: Conservatives rationalize social and economic inequalities. Regardless of marital status, income or church attendance,...

Spiritual Bonding By John Paul There will be times when someone special will walk into your life and a bonding of the spirits will take place. This means that both people are compatible, and that their inner spirits are harmonious with each other. Because of this, a kinship is started first, followed by deep inner emotional feelings for each other, all because the spirits are harmonious. At this point we say that we have an attraction for each other, or that the chemistry is right. The true understanding of relationships is in the divine human spirit, which is the foundation of all happy and good relationships. Sometimes we allow reason to cloud our judgment so that we are unable to become aware of our true feelings. We feel through our mind instead of our hearts, and become confused. When that special person enters your life, and you sense the bonding of the spirits, then hold on tight and don't let go, because unions such as this do not happen all the time. How Will I Know? You w...

Don't Seek Success - Seek Self-Actualization [adapted from WE DON'T AGREE, BUT...] by Paul Siegel "You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give." So said Winston Churchill. Cooperation and giving is better for you than competition and taking. Competitors do not see it this way. To them, making money is an overriding goal so they and their families can live in "style." In the name of money they run in the rat race. When they win and become CEO rats, they wonder why they are depressed and unhappy with their lives. The reason is simple. They do not have a larger purpose. There is no meaning in the work they do. They are not being helpful to people. They are not givers, but takers. They are not cooperators but competitors. Cooperators have a vision to serve other people. If they help others by doing what they love to do they eventually reach self-actualization. Self-actualization is the highest need in Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Nee...
