Scalia To Synagogue - Jews Are Safer With Christians In Charge by Thom Hartmann Antonin Scalia, the man most likely to be our next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, turned history on its head recently when he attended an Orthodox synagogue in New York and claimed that the Founders intended for their Christianity to play a part in government. Scalia then went so far as to suggest that the reason Hitler was able to initiate the Holocaust was because of German separation of church and state. The Associated Press reported on November 23, 2004, "In the synagogue that is home to America's oldest Jewish congregation, he [Scalia] noted that in Europe, religion-neutral leaders almost never publicly use the word 'God.'" "Did it turn out that," Scalia asked rhetorically, "by reason of the separation of church and state, the Jews were safer in Europe than they were in the United States of America?" He then answered himself, saying, "I don't thin

Is there anything he can do that's more left wing that can put him in more disrespect with the right wing Blanket city in latex? BY KATE MEYER and LISA L. COLANGELO / DAILY NEWS WRITERS Coming soon to a cinema, Laundromat or nail salon near you: free condoms, if city officials get their way. "We can stop the HIV epidemic with the tools that we have today," Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden said yesterday. "We know that condoms prevent HIV - let's get them out everywhere." Making free condoms available at such public places was one of the recommendations in a 44-page draft report issued yesterday by the New York City Commission on HIV/AIDS, which includes city health officials, researchers, AIDS service organizations and persons living with the disease. But not everyone likes the idea. "I think it's right to promote safe sex, but I don't think this is the right venue," said Toni Ryan, 40, who was getting her hair braided at the Fanta Hair

You're going to run over them. Get around them, run over the top of them, destroy them - whatever you need to do so that God's word is the word that is being practiced in Congress, town halls and state legislatures. That's your job. - Bill Thomson, Christian Coalition Field Director People For the American Way Foundation got its start 25 years ago when a bipartisan group of business, religious, civic, and civil rights leaders got together to counter efforts by Jerry Falwell and his ilk to advance a far-right political agenda through partisan religiosity. Now, 25 years later, we have taken the very first TV spot we ran – stressing the dangers of manipulating religion for political gain – and made it the centerpiece of our newest ad. PFAW Foundation was motivated to update this prescient spot because crass political abuse of religion is no longer restricted to the Jerry Falwells and the Pat Robertsons of the world – it has become a tool of elected officials at the highest l

Inside America's Most Powerful Megachurch By Jeff Sharlet The following is the first half of "Soldiers of Christ: Inside America's Most Powerful Megachurch," a feature by Revealer editor Jeff Sharlet in the May, 2005 issue of Harper's. They are drawn as if by magnetic forces; they speak of Colorado Springs, home to the greatest concentration of fundamentalist Christian activist groups in American history, both as a last stand and as a kind of utopia in the making. They say it is new and unique and precious, embattled by enemies, and also that it is “traditional,” a blueprint for what everybody wants, and envied by enemies. The city itself is unspectacular, a grid of wide western avenues lined with squat, gray and beige box buildings, only a handful of them taller than a dozen stories. Local cynics point out that if you put Colorado Springs on a truck and carted it to Nebraska, it would make Omaha look lovely. But the architecture is not what draws Christians look

Welcome to the BUSH THEOCRACY! The Tom DeLay Justice Sundays!! God Gave 'What We Deserve,' Evangelists Say Washington Post Service By John F. Harris Washington -- The television evangelists Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, two of the most prominent voices of the religious right, said liberal civil liberties groups, feminists, homosexuals and abortion rights supporters bore partial responsibility for the terrorist attacks [on 9-11] because their actions had turned God's anger against America . "God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve," said Mr. Falwell, appearing Thursday on the Christian Broadcasting Network's "700 Club," with Mr. Robertson as host. "Jerry, that's my feeling,
