August 26 of each year is designated in the United States as Women's Equality Day. Instituted by Rep. Bella Abzug and first established in 1971, the date commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, the Woman Suffrage Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave U.S. women full voting rights in 1920. CHRISTIAN NATION... OF IGNORANCE With a presidential election coming in about a year, there's been much chatter in the blogosphere about the candidates. Some even on this blog. I have lamented with other bloggers that there are no real leaders anywhere in either party. To me, it all seems very homogenized. I love politics and history. Always have. My late mother, however, would draw me into a political discussion with her other adult friends then chastize me severely for having strong opinions as well being able to argue point for point with her friends. She didn't like it and made me believe I was being 'uppity.' My trauma counselors believe she was jealous. I learned to keep my mouth closed and just shut down that part of me until recently. Another family member is a big politics-junkie too. And that got me going again as well as into blogging in 2003. Pakistan is in a serious mess - but did anyone notice? By Mary Shaw Things got ugly in Pakistan over the weekend. General Pervez Musharraf, the current president of Pakistan, has gone wild. He suspended the Constitution, and has declared a state of emergency, as of 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 3. Musharraf's goons have arrested his political opponents and judges, lawyers, and human rights activists. The upcoming election, scheduled for January 2008, may be postponed. All private TV channels and international media have been taken off the air. It's basically a police state. And it's quite possibly about to explode. Now consider the following: • The CIA believes [1] that Pakistan is harboring al-Qaeda, including Osama bin Laden. • Pakistan has nukes [2]. • That is a very volatile part of the world to begin with. CALL HIM AL O.K. I like Al Gore. He's tall ( like my Dad was - though my Dad looked a lot more like Fred Thompson ), he's smart and he sticks to his ethics & principles no matter what others say about him. Yeah, that would be my kinda guy. I know - he can't dance. I am old enough to know I can't have everything. But, I have always been drawn to smart people - even when I don't agree with them. Intelligence is my achille's heel. I am glad he won the Nobel Peace Prize . Though I don't put much stock in that prize after they gave it to Terror-Fat in 1994 and President Peanut-Brain in 2002. Prizes don't mean much to me anyway; I have never been a competitive person. But one of the reasons I like Gore is, in my opinion, his powerful and clear thoughts about democracy, the environment and our country's obligations to its citizens.
