Like Attracts Like

From the always great, UppityWoman:

Okay, at this point you have got to figure that either every government big shot is a tax cheat or Barack Obama has an attraction to cheaters. You pick.

Perhaps they are just desensitizing us to cheaters in the way they are desensitizing us to the word “Trillion”.

Health and Human Servicesnominee Kathleen Sebelius has corrected three years of tax returns and paid more than $7,000 in back taxes after finding “unintentional errors” — the latest tax troubles for an Obama administration nominee.

The Kansas governor explained the changes to senators in a letter dated Tuesday that was obtained by The Associated Press. She said they involved charitable contributions, the sale of a home and business expenses.

She and her husband paid a total of $7,040 in back taxes and $878 in interest to amend returns from 2005-2007.

It seems that Ms Sebelius simply had no idea she was a tax cheat until she asked her accountant to ‘review’ her tax returns because she was an Obama cabinet nominee. Otherwise, whatever she pulled would have gone unnoticed. God knows, the years before 2005 are lost in space.

The accountant discovered these errors:
  • Charitable contributions over $250 are supposed to include an acknowledgment letter from the charity in order for a deduction to be taken. Out of 49 charitable contributions made, three letters couldn’t be found.
  • Sebelius and her husband sold their home in 2006 and then took a mistaken deduction for mortgage interest.
  • Insufficient documentation was found for some business expense deductions.
A “mistaken” mortgage interest deduction? “Insufficient documentation” for business deductions? Charitable contributions with no proof? I guess Charities don’t keep records either, right? Wrong.

Don’t try this at home.

Well my goodness. Perhaps we ought to have everybody in government who is in charge of some facet of our lives review their tax returns and pretend they are Obama appointees. Think of all the money our country would collect.

... and of course, Ms. Sebelius didn’t have to pay any penalties. Penalties are for Thee. But after all, at least she cheated less than the Daschle, so I guess that makes it okay.

I suppose at least we should be grateful she’s not in charge of the IRS or something.
