INSTANT KARMA

Let me be very clear that I am in NO WAY implying that PM Olmert deserved prostate cancer. I do believe that perhaps this illness is a wake up call. Hashem does that - send us little wake up calls all along the way in our lives. Sometimes our pure God-center (that part of us that is always connected to the Divine), I believe, sends them to us too. Sometimes we can be the wake-up call or 'accountability moment' for someone else.

I've been reading about Olmert's antics for the last few months. I haven't blogged about it because I truly feel others at JBlogs have done a much better and thorough job. But I am disheartened. The trust of the people of Israel, I feel, has been slapped by Olmert - who seems content to give away pieces of Hashem's promise to the Jewish people to anyone who bullies him enough.

Whatever it is I will pray for Mr. Olmert's healing. I will also pray that Hashem changes his heart about isses like the division of Jerusalem, allowing digging and destroying precious Second Temple artifacts at the Temple Mount and his continuing to negotiate with those who do NOT have Israel's best interests at heart.

Mr. Olmert, your clue phone is ringing. For the sake of Israel, answer it.

INSTANT KARMA
by John Lennon

Instant Karma's gonna get you
Gonna knock you right on the head
You better get yourself together
Pretty soon you're gonna be dead
What in the world you thinking of
Laughing in the face of love
What on earth you tryin' to do
It's up to you,
yeah you

Olmert says he has prostate cancer
By Isabel Kershner and Graham Bowley

JERUSALEM: Israel's prime minister, Ehud Olmert, announced Monday that he has early stage prostate cancer, but said the cancer is not life-threatening and would not distract him from his work.

Olmert, who is 62, said the illness had come to light following routine tests several days ago. Speaking at a news conference where he was joined by two of his doctors, Olmert said he would undergo a short surgical procedure in several months, and he would not require chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

"I will be able to function fully before the treatment and a few hours after it," he said. "I will be fully able to carry out my role."

Rumors about the state of Olmert's health swirled throughout the morning following the unexpected announcement of the news conference, and, according to Israeli radio, the uncertainty had pushed down the Israeli stock market.

Instant Karma's gonna get you
Gonna look you right in the face
Better get yourself together darlin'
Join the human race
How in the world you gonna see
Laughin' at fools like me
Who in the hell d'you think you are
A super star
Well, right you are

Olmert took office in March 2006 after his predecessor, Ariel Sharon, suffered a crippling stroke. Sharon still lies in a coma in a hospital.

Olmert underwent tests about 10 days ago following his return from an official visit to Russia, he said at the press conference Monday. He said he received the results several days ago and had felt pressed to call the news conference to deliver a "personal message" relating to his health.

Olmert was joined at the news conference by two doctors — Kobi Ramon, who is working on Olmert's case at a Tel Aviv hospital, and by the prime minister's official doctor, Shlomo Segev. Olmert said the cancer was a microscopic growth in his prostate gland which had not spread.

Olmert's time in office has been tumultuous, even by Israeli standards. He survived calls for his resignation following a harshly critical government report about his management of Israel's war against Hezbollah in 2006.

Instant Karma's gonna get you
Gonna knock you off your feet
Better recognize your brothers
Ev'ryone you meet
Why in the world are we here
Surely not to live in pain and fear
Why on earth are you there
When you're ev'rywhere
Come and get your share

He has also faced police and judicial investigations, and earlier this month was questioned for five hours by the police at his official residence as part of a criminal investigation into whether he tried, as acting finance minister, to help steer the sale of an Israeli bank to a friend in 2005.

He met last Friday with the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, for more than two hours and they reaffirmed their commitment to carrying out the first phase of the so-called road map peace plan.

Olmert has been holding regular talks with Abbas in the run-up to an American-sponsored peace conference expected to take place in Annapolis, Maryland, before the end of the year.

Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Yeah we all shine on
Come on and on and on on on
Yeah yeah, alright, uh huh, ah
